A First‑Hand Review of Swan Hellenic’s SH Diana: Modern Expedition Cruising With a Heritage Heart

When Swan Hellenic’s SH Diana called into Portsmouth, I had the chance to step aboard and explore one of the most intriguing expedition ships sailing today. At 125 metres long, carrying up to 192 guests, and launched in 2023, SH Diana is the largest vessel in the Swan Hellenic fleet, yet she still feels intimate, elegant, and unmistakably boutique. Swan Hellenic is a name with real heritage and a company that pioneered cultural expedition cruising long before it became fashionable. Seeing SH Diana up close made it clear how successfully the brand has been re‑imagined for a new generation of curious travellers.

Swan Hellenic: A Heritage Brand Reborn

Swan Hellenic’s story stretches back to the 1950s, when the company became known for its scholarly, culturally rich cruises led by academics, historians, and destination experts. These weren’t typical holiday voyages, instead they were journeys of learning, discovery, and immersion.

After a period away from the spotlight, Swan Hellenic was relaunched with a completely new fleet and a renewed mission: “See What Others Don’t.”

Today, the line operates three purpose‑built expedition ships:

  • SH Minerva
  • SH Vega
  • SH Diana

All three vessels are designed for polar and remote‑region exploration, combining boutique comfort with serious expedition capability.

SH Diana: A Modern Expedition Ship With Boutique Style

SH Diana is the largest ship in the Swan Hellenic fleet, yet she still feels intimate, warm, and beautifully understated. Stepping aboard in Portsmouth, the first impression was one of calm Scandinavian design with clean lines, soft textures, natural materials, and a sense of space that feels more like a contemporary boutique hotel than a traditional expedition vessel.

Public Spaces

The ship’s interiors are elegant without being flashy. Highlights include:

  • The Observation Lounge - panoramic views, perfect for wildlife watching or quiet moments at sea
  • The Swan Restaurant - refined dining with a focus on fresh, global flavours
  • The Club Lounge - relaxed, stylish, and ideal for lighter bites
  • Expedition Lab  - where naturalists, historians, and scientists bring destinations to life

Every space feels thoughtfully designed, with an emphasis on comfort, calm, and connection to the outside world.

Staterooms & Suites

Accommodation on SH Diana is spacious and beautifully finished. Even the entry‑level staterooms feel premium, with:

  • Warm, modern décor
  • Large windows or balconies
  • Generous storage
  • High‑quality bedding and materials

It’s clear that Swan Hellenic wants guests to feel at home even in the most remote corners of the world.

Outdoor Decks

Expedition ships live or die by their outdoor spaces, and SH Diana excels here. Wide decks, sheltered viewing areas, and easy access to the waterline make wildlife spotting and scenic cruising effortless.

But what really surprised me on a ship of her size is the inclusion of a heated outdoor swimming pool and a jacuzzi. These touches add a layer of comfort and indulgence that feels wonderfully welcome after a day of Zodiac landings or time spent out on deck in colder climates. Whether you're sailing through the Arctic or exploring remote coastlines, being able to unwind in warm water while surrounded by dramatic scenery is a genuine highlight.

One of the ship’s most distinctive features is the Swan’s Neck observation platform and a beautifully designed forward‑facing vantage point that curves out over the bow. It gives guests an unobstructed, almost cinematic view of the scenery ahead, making it perfect for spotting wildlife, watching ice formations, or simply taking in the vastness of the polar regions. It’s a signature Swan Hellenic touch and one of the best observation points I’ve seen on an expedition vessel.

Expedition Capability: Built for the World’s Most Remote Places

SH Diana is a true expedition vessel, equipped with:

  • PC6 ice‑strengthened hull
  • Zodiacs for landings and wildlife viewing
  • Kayaks and expedition equipment
  • A highly experienced expedition team

This is a ship designed to go far beyond typical cruise routes, from polar regions to remote archipelagos and lesser‑visited cultural destinations.

Where Swan Hellenic Sails: A World of Remote Discovery

Swan Hellenic’s itineraries are some of the most distinctive in the expedition market. They specialise in off‑the‑beaten‑path exploration, including:

Polar Regions

  • Antarctica
  • South Georgia & the Falklands
  • Arctic Svalbard
  • Greenland & the Canadian High Arctic

Cultural Expedition Routes

  • West Africa
  • The Mediterranean & Black Sea
  • South America
  • Japan & the Kuril Islands
  • The Kimberley in Australia

These aren’t typical cruise itineraries, they’re journeys designed for travellers who want to understand the world, not just see it. Swan Hellenic’s expert‑led approach links perfectly with the modern rise of expedition cruising, where learning, wildlife, culture, and remote landscapes take centre stage.

My Impression of SH Diana in Portsmouth

Walking around SH Diana, it was clear that Swan Hellenic has struck a rare balance: a ship that feels luxurious without being ostentatious, adventurous without being rugged, and intimate without feeling small. The atmosphere is calm, thoughtful, and quietly premium. It's exactly what you’d want on a voyage to the world’s most extraordinary places.

The crew were warm and welcoming, the design is beautifully executed, and the ship feels ready for anything from polar ice to tropical archipelagos.
