Fly‑Cruise vs Cruise from the UK: Which Holiday Style Suits You Best?

Image
For many travellers, choosing between a fly‑cruise and a cruise departing directly from the UK is the first big decision of the holiday. Both offer incredible experiences, but they deliver them in very different ways. One prioritises convenience and a gentle start to your journey; the other unlocks sunshine, exotic ports, and bucket‑list destinations from the moment you arrive. Understanding the strengths of each can help you shape a holiday that feels effortless, exciting, and perfectly suited to the way you like to travel.  Sailing from the UK has a charm all of its own. There’s something wonderfully relaxing about driving to the port, handing over your luggage, and stepping straight onboard. No airport queues, no security lines, no baggage restrictions. Your holiday begins the moment you walk up the gangway. For families, older travellers, or anyone who simply prefers a calmer start, this no‑fly simplicity is a major advantage. It’s also ideal for longer voyages, where unlimited...

Allure of the Seas – Suite Class Ship Visit – September 2025

Image
In September I had an inspiring weekend in Barcelona with Royal Caribbean, where I was invited to their inaugural Suite Class Ship Visit—a brilliant opportunity to deepen my understanding of their premium offering and see the 2025 amplification of Allure of the Seas .   There were 12 agents in total, spread across different agencies and geographical locations, brought together by five different flights. A great mix of perspectives, and a reminder of how valuable these shared learning opportunities can be. It was a little over a 36-hour roundtrip, with an early morning flight out to Barcelona and a next-day evening flight home. We packed a lot into the short time, and it was absolutely worth it to experience an Oasis Class ship first-hand - especially as you don’t see them in home waters.           We started with an overnight at the Renaissance Barcelona Fira, which worked well as a pre-cruise base. Located in Plaza Europa, it’s around 10 minutes from t...

First-time cruiser advice: Demystify embarkation, dining, and excursions

Your first cruise is a thrilling adventure, but it’s natural to feel a little uncertain about what to expect. From the moment you arrive at the port to the day you step ashore for excursions, knowing the basics can transform nerves into excitement. Embarkation made simple Embarkation day sets the tone for your holiday. Arrive at the terminal with your documents ready - passport and boarding pass. Security and check-in are straightforward, much like an airport, but with a much friendlier atmosphere. Once through, you’ll walk directly onto the ship, greeted by crew who are eager to welcome you aboard. Remember, your checked luggage may take a few hours to reach your stateroom, so pack a small carry-on with essentials: swimwear, medication, chargers, and perhaps a book and suntan lotion. That way, you can start enjoying the ship immediately, whether that's lounging by the pool or exploring the decks. Dining without the mystery One of the biggest surprises for first-time cruisers is th...

Haugesund, Norway: Birthplace of a Nation

Image
Haugesund may not have the towering fjords of Olden or Geiranger, but it offers something different: a blend of Viking heritage, coastal scenery, and authentic Norwegian culture. Situated between Bergen and Stavanger, this southwestern port is a frequent stop on UK‑based fjords cruises, welcoming ships to its compact harbour where history and modern life meet. Viking Roots and National Monuments Haugesund is often referred to as the Birthplace of Norway , thanks to its deep Viking connections. Just outside the town lies Avaldsnes , home to the Viking Village and museum where visitors can step back into the era of King Harald Fairhair, the first king to unite Norway. In town, the Haraldshaugen National Monument commemorates this unification, standing proudly as Norway’s national monument. For cruise passengers, these sites offer a fascinating glimpse into the country’s origins. Coastal Walks and City Charm The town centre is only a short walk or shuttle ride from the cruise pier, ma...
