Cruising the Norwegian Fjords from the UK
The Norwegian Fjords are one of those destinations that stay with you. Towering cliffs, waterfalls tumbling into deep blue waters, and small villages tucked along the shoreline—it’s scenery that feels timeless. For UK travellers, the beauty of this region is matched by the simplicity of getting there. With cruises sailing directly from Southampton, Newcastle, Liverpool, Dover, Tilbury, and Rosyth (Edinburgh), you can step aboard close to home and let the holiday begin without the stress of airports or long flights.
A typical seven night itinerary might include Bergen,
Geiranger, Ålesund, or Stavanger. Bergen is often called the gateway to the
fjords, with its colourful wooden houses and the funicular ride up Mount Fløyen
for sweeping views. Geirangerfjord, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is famous for
its dramatic waterfalls and steep mountainsides. Ålesund charms with its Art
Nouveau architecture and panoramic viewpoints, while Stavanger offers access to
Pulpit Rock, which is one of Norway’s most iconic natural landmarks. Longer
itineraries can stretch further north, taking in Tromsø or the Lofoten Islands
for those who want to combine fjords with Arctic exploration.
Different cruise lines bring their own flavour to the
experience. From Southampton, you’ll find P&O Cruises’ Iona,
MSC’s Virtuosa, Princess Cruises’ Sky Princess, Royal Caribbean’s
Liberty of the Seas, and Celebrity’s Apex. Newcastle
offers Fred. Olsen’s Bolette and Balmoral, along with Ambassador
Cruise Line’s Ambition. Liverpool and Rosyth (Edinburgh)
often feature Fred. Olsen sailings, while Tilbury is the main homeport
for Ambassador’s Ambience, offering shorter itineraries and regional
convenience.
Timing matters too. The season runs from May through
September, each month with its own character. In May and June, snow still
crowns the peaks and waterfalls are at their fullest. July and August bring
warmer weather and long daylight hours, perfect for outdoor excursions and,
further north, the midnight sun. September is quieter, with autumn colours and
crisp air that make the fjords a photographer’s dream.
